Who is Andreas Winkler?

As the Siewart era begins at Town, so does the evolution of the club, beginning with a changing of the guard.

Already, unsurprisingly, Sporting Director Olaf Rebbe has departed from the club and with that, there is a sense that a new chapter at the club has begun.

It’s yet to be seen how Siewart will look to shape things on the pitch. Off the pitch, however, we have seen Siewart look to assert his authority by cultivating his own backroom team.

It has already begun with the poaching of Barnsley Assistant Coach Andreas Winkler.

Who is Andreas Winkler?

For most Town fans, Andreas Winkler arrives as a relative unknown despite working in England since June 2018.

Working alongside fellow German Daniel Stendel, Andreas Winkler has been the right-hand man of the 44-year-old German head coach as they looked to mastermind Barnsley’s return to the Championship.

Judging by the reaction by a lot of Barnsley fans, this seems like a good move, with most either upset or resigned to him reuniting with his former boss again.

To get more of an insight into Winkler, we spoke to Barnsley fanzine EyUp&Down

“As a man, he came across brilliantly. Media-wise he did the bulk of interviews etc due to our manager’s failure lack of proficient English.

“They obviously had a good relationship. Our playing style, performances and league position can back that up. The team have been an absolute pleasure to watch this season but the question on all Barnsley fans minds is…how much input did Winkler have? I suppose these next few weeks will tell us.

“I for one wish him well. I hope it doesn’t de-rail our return to the Championship but again, time will tell. He seems a lovely and charismatic bloke.

“From a selfish point of view, I’m hoping his input wasn’t significant.”

From first glance, it seems to be an astute move by Town. Already, Jan Siewert and Andreas Winkler have a working relationship as Winkler was Siewart’s assistant at German side Rot-Weiss Essen.

With Andreas Winkler having a firm grasp of England, English culture and most importantly English football, Winkler is capable of helping Jan Siewert in this early transition period.

Andreas Winkler also arrives as an older more experienced head which will prove invaluable for Town’s 36-year-old Head Coach.

Winkler appears to be the perfect foil for Siewart and a man who can communicate Siewart’s preferred philosophy and methods both to the players and the fans.

We can only hope this reunion will bear fruit in the weeks and months ahead.
