Premier League Winner On His Way?
On Thursday morning John Percy of the Telegraph claimed:
‘Huddersfield have made a bid for Leicester striker Shinji Okazaki, who is out of contract at the end of this season. Understand the opening offer has been rejected’.
Following on from this, Sky Sports also confirmed Town had approached Leicester about the 32-year-old. Wagner was in fact questioned about this, he commented saying:
“I am not able to confirm anything to any name. I don’t like to comment on any individual names. This makes no sense because the window is open, we have to be patient and on the other side all of the players are not our players”.
There’s certainly more to expect from this transfer story in the next couple of days.
Josh Maja To Town?
Everyone knows Huddersfield lack a goal-scorer and that needs to be sorted this month.
Last week it came out that Sunderland striker Josh Maja rejected the latest contract from the club in which they offered seven times his current wage.
With this news, The Guardian broke a story reporting Huddersfield Town, Crystal Palace, and Manchester City were all interested in Sunderland’s current top goal-scorer after rejecting the latest contract offer.
Shortly after, Sky Sports stated:
‘Sky sources understand Huddersfield, Crystal Palace and Cardiff are all interested in signing Maja whose current contract expires in the summer.’
The young striker has already netted 15 goals this season for the League One side.
However, Maja wasn’t alone. Two other players linked with Town have been Jarrod Bowen from Hull City and Jacob Murphy from Newcastle United.
Sporting Life reported that 8 clubs including Huddersfield had enquired about Bowen ahead of the Window. As it stands no other reports are suggesting Town will make a move.
Regarding Jacob Murphy, The Daily Mirror claiming Town have approached Newcastle about taking Murphy on loan due to the lack of game time he has had this season.
However, Benitez has said Murphy won’t leave on loan unless they get players in this window.
One For The Future?
We all know Town have a history of signing players from the lower leagues of English football such as Joe Lolley and it seems this trend might continue.
On December 30th The Daily Mirror (paper edition) reported that Huddersfield were set to win the Fight for 20-year-old striker Joshua Koroma from National League side Leyton Orient.
The story pretty much died down until a few days later when TEAMTalk claimed that Town were to set to beat the likes of Aston Villa & Derby for the striker’s signature.
If Koroma did join he would most likely either stay at Orient till the end of the season as they bid for a return back to the Football league; or he would go into the Elite Development Team at Town. This is a story to keep your eyes on.
Town Looking Overseas?
Since Wagner took charge most of Towns signing have come from overseas. So far this window Town have been linked to a few players from various European Leagues.
One named being linked with a move to West Yorkshire is Empoli Midfielder Miha Zajc. According to Italian Publication Gazzetta dello Sport, the Serbian midfielder has proposals from both Newcastle United and Huddersfield Town.
Leading on from this, another Italian newspaper Calciomercato report that Zajc wants to leave Empoli this month and he could be heading to the Premier League, with Huddersfield and Newcastle now keen. They also claim that Zajc will be available for just €5million to €6million (£4.5million to £5.37million). Zajc, 24, has notched two goals and two assists in Serie A this season.
Moving to France, well known French newspaper L’Équipe reported that Huddersfield Town are interested in Toulouse forward Firmin Mubele but will face competition from other European Clubs.
A deal seems unlikely though as the article claims he’s most likely destination will a loan move to Turkey.
Jack Payne’s Future…
Remember that afternoon up in the clouds at Newcastle when Town managed to come away with 3 points from the recently relegated team? The man who scored the winner, Jack Payne is out of contract this summer.
So far this season, Payne has spent all of the season on-loan at Town’s rivals Bradford City. Up to now he has been their player of the season with many Bradford Fans hoping the club can somehow bring him in on a permanent deal.
On New Year’s Eve, highly regarded sports journalist Pete O’Rourke reported that Luton Town and Peterborough were among several clubs after Huddersfield’s Jack Payne after impressing with Bradford.
Leading on from this, The Sun reported that Millwall are set to bid £500k for Bradford City star man Jack Payne, who is also a target for Peterborough United and Luton Town.
Although Payne does have an option for an extra year on his contract it does seem highly likely we will know what the future of Jack Payne holds after this window with Wagner confirming Town do have a recall option for the midfielder should they need to use it.
One Keeper In, One Keeper Out
And finally, on Thursday, Huddersfield confirmed that they had recalled Goalkeeper Joel Coleman from his Loan at League One Shrewsbury.
Coleman made 20 appearances for the club, however, he had fallen out of favour since November.
Heading out of Town is Youngster Ryan Schofield, who has gone out on-loan to League Two side Notts County till the end of the season.
